JOHN WOOLLCOMBE OF PITTON, son and heir of William Woollcombe of Pitton. (page 157).

He was the first member of this branch who used the name as now spelt.

In the pedigree which he entered at the Visitation of Devon in 1620 he was stated to have been aged 43 in 1620 and was therefore born in 1577.

He was made a JP for Devon in 1603. He obtained confirmation of the arms in 1612 from William Camden, Clarenceux King of Arms, a copy of which is given at (pages 2 and 3).

He married Joan 2nd daughter of John Skinner of Cowley, in the parish of

Bramfordspeke, in the County of Devon.

According to a paper at Ashbury there was formerly over the pulpit in Yealmpton Church a Hatchement displaying the achievement of John Woollcombe of Pitton. The arms were Woollcombe and Pitts quarterly, impaling Skinner.

There was also formerly affixed to the Eastern wall of the South aisle a plan of the seats by which it appears that there were resident in the parish in 1638 the following:-

JOHN WOOLCOMBE Gent

WILLIAM WOOLCOMBE

ROBERT WOOLCOMBE

SUSAN WOOLCOMBE

AGNES WOOLCOMBE

These had disappeared when I first visited Yealmpton in 1877. (CLW)
