In April 1851 Census(St. Mathews Ecc. District) he is living at I?land Road, Royal Academy, Cold Harbour, Hants. His wife, 2 sons, sister Elisabeth and a niece called Lucy Poole aged 10 are also present. Also listed are 4 teachers and approx. 57 students.
From the autobiography of Sir David Harrel 1841 - 1938 (He would have attended the academy in about 1855)
"Responding to my strong desire to join the Royal Navy as a Cadet a nomination was applied for and I was sent to Dr. Burney's Royal Naval Academy at Gosport to be prepard for the examination. The number of the candidates on the Admiralty lists was very large and unfortunately I had passed the age limit, 14 before the date fixed for the examination. My time at Burney's was well spent, it was rough, but Dr. Burney himself was beloved by the boys and gave a high tone to the place. The School was situated at Cold Harbour and was somewhat remarkable in possessing five boats, each of 14 oars, painted green and whit and bearing the Royal arms. When thr Royal Yachts "Fairly" and "Elphin" conveying the Queen to Osborne passed out of Portsmouth Harbour the green boats were got afloat and saluted Her Majesty by tossing oars. The Queen always graciously recognised the salute. Two companies of soldiers attended Gosport Church, part of the German Foreign Legion, many were aged bearded and spectacled men. It was not quite known for what purpose they had been recruited. Remaining at the School until 1856 I attended classes at Portsmouth Dockyard and saw the last wooden three decker on the stocks, afterwards named the "Maboro" and I think it was this ship Lord Charles Beresford joined as a cadet."
According to Kelly?s ?Titled Landed and Official Classes? of 1891 his address was Bay House Alverstoke. (Although he had died in 1888)
Bay House was sold in 1892 to Colonel Francis Sloane-Stanley
"Bay House.
This house was built for Lord Ashburton (Alexander Baring) in 1838 as a summer residence. The architecht was Decimus Burton. Lord Ashburton had been President of the Board of Trade in Robert Peel's Ministry and consequently numerous important government officials would visit Bay House and its neighbour Alverbank House.
In 1870 Bay House was sold to Rev. Edward Burney and became a Naval College known as Ashbutron House. In 1892 Burney's daughters sold the house to the Sloane-Stanley family.
Eventually it became a school with various names such as, Gosport County School, and Gosport County Grammar School. In 1958 new buildings were opened at the Bay House site by Sir John Wolfenden. After some alamagmations it is now known as Bay House School."

Burney - on the 8th instant, at the Bay House, Alverstoke, the Rev. Edward Burney, M.A., J.P., for 42 years Principal of the Royal Academy, Gosport, aged 72 years.
From the 'Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle', dated 11 August 1888, P2.
"Gosport.
Death of the Rev. Edward Burney - it is with regret that we record the death of the Rev. Edward Burney, which took place on Wednesday afternoon at his residence, Bay House, Alverstoke, after a protracted illness, at the age of 72 years. The deceased had been for many years a Justice of the Peace and a member of the Alverstoke Local Board. He was also a member of the old Gosport Trustees, and was connected with several private companies, being Chairman of the Water Company. He was for 42 years Master of the Royal Academy, Clarence Square, which school was founded by his father. At the Police Court yesterday, the Chairman (Mr. G. Long) referred to the death of the Rev. Edward Burney and said they all very much deplored the loss. The deceased had sat on the Bench between twelve and thirteen years, and no one could have attended to the business better than he had done. No one would feel the loss greater than those with whom he had sat so long. Mr. G. Feltham, solicitor, followed with a few words expressing the deep regret of the lawyers practicing at the Court.
The funeral for the deceased is fixed for this (Saturday) afternoon, at three o'clock, at the Alverstoke church."
From the 'Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle', dated 18 August 1888, P3.
"Funeral of the Rev. Edward Burney - the remains of the late Rev. Edward Burney were interred in Alverstoke churchyard on Saturday afternoon. The body was enclosed in a polished oak coffin, covered in beautiful wreaths sent by relatives and friends and was carried to the church in a Washington car. The chief mourners were the Rev. Amyatt Burney, Captain Horace Amyatt Burney, Colonel Charles Burney and Captain Amyatt. There was a large number of carriages containing the representatives of the various bodies with which the deceased was connected and tradesmen of the town. Services having been conducted in the church by the Rector of Alverstoke (the Rev. Canon Brodrick) and the Rev. O. S. Walford, the coffin was carried to the grave by the servants of Bay House and the Royal Academy, where the burial service was completed by Canon Brodrick.
The pall bearers were Messrs. A. C. Snape, S. J. Woodman, H. J. Slater, and C. F. Russe."
