Robert Woollcombe

Went to Malborough College. From an obiturary in the Daily Telegraph dated Friday 22 March 1996: "Capt R Woollcombe Captain Robert Woollcombe, who has died aged 73, was an author and playwright. His acclaimed book 'Lion Rampant' described, under pseudonyms, the experiences of the 6th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers in the desperate battles from Normandy to the Baltic in 1944 and 1945. Robert Woollcombe, the son of Lt-Gen Sir Charles Woollcombe (in fact he was the grandson - NW), was born in 1922 and was educated at Marlborough. He enlisted in the 60th Rifles in 1941 and was commissioned into the King's Own Scottish Borderers, with whom he served as a company commander in north-west Europe and India. After demobilisation he enrolled at the Old Vic Theatre School, studying under George Devine, Michael St Denis and Glen Byam Shaw. He then became an assistant stage manager, first at the Arts Theatre Club and then with the English Opera Group at Aldeburgh (in association with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears). His books included 'The Campaigns of Wavell, 1933-1945', 'The Winds of March' ( a novel) and 'The First Tank Battle, Cambrai, 1917', which was highly commended by the tank expert B H Liddell Hart. He also wrote 'All the Blue Bonnets', a regimental history of the KOSB. He married in 1952 and is survived by his widow, two daughters and a son."
